Buikslotermeerplein, the (new) Heart of North
Amsterdam North is changing rapidly. Many locations are under construction or are in the process of planning for development to begin. A district with so many new homes and therefore residents deserves a real city center. That role is reserved for the Buikslotermeerplein. This is a street, square, and area in the Buikslotermeerpolder. The majority of the area is occupied by the Boven ‘t Y shopping center, the largest in the district.
The appearance of the Buikslotermeerplein deserves renovation. This is also the opinion of the municipality, which has been busy for years with a plan to make the area more vibrant and greener. From this, it becomes clear that the area will undergo a tremendous transformation. The shopping center, thanks to modernization, must attract a new audience, and construction is in full swing around it. Zo moet het gebied uitgroeien tot een levendig ‘Hart van Noord’, met meer ruimte voor wonen, werken, groen, winkelen en uitgaan. The municipality aims to facilitate the construction of approximately 2,400 homes.
More name recognition and attraction
The ambitions for the area are significant, but for most residents of North, the Buikslotermeerplein has been the center of North for years. People come here for their daily groceries, shopping, and to meet up. Many buses to, from, and through North pass by here. With the arrival of the North/South metro line, the center has become even more accessible, and the Buikslotermeerplein has gained more name recognition and appeal throughout the city.

There is constant brainstorming about what can be improved and what truly adds value to North. Ultimately, the Buikslotermeerplein should become the main attraction of North.
